CVC notation is used to stand for words with certain consonant/vowel patterns. CVC, for instance, stands for any consontant-vowel-consonant word such as cat; CCVC stands for words such as sled and crab.

FreeReading extends the standard CVC notation to distinguish between continuous consonants and stop consonants:

  • C~ represents a continuous consonant; C~VC stands for mad but not cat.
  • C. represents a stop consonant; C.VC stands for cat but not mad.
  • C (without additional notation) represents either a continuous or stop consonant; CVC stands for mad and cat.
